Grondona was taken to Mitre Hospital intensive care in the early AM hours of this morning after suffering an aneurysm in his aorta artery. Minutes before an emergency operation was to take place, the AFA president passed away around noon local time.
Julio Grondona will leave his place to AFA vice-president and Argentinos Juniors chairman, Luis Segura.
Last year, Grondona and his son Humberto had announced that his 35-year tenure would end in 2015 and were still planning how the elections would take place. This meaning that Segura will only be in charge for a year, unless he is elected democratically in 2015.
Grondona's press conference scheduled for today along Alejandro Sabella to explain the reasoning behind the coach's resignation has been cancelled.
The first week of the "Apertura" season in Argentina has officially been cancelled as well.
FIFA president, Joseph Blatter, has gone to Twitter to express his sadness over his "friend's" death and sent his regards to the Grondona family.
